How is the ICL or IPCL implanted?
Implantation of the ICL or IPCL is a procedure that is done by an ophthalmologist, often as an outpatient surgery, and is minimally invasive. Before going in for surgery, the patient will be required to have a thorough eye exam that finds out the exact prescription and evaluates the overall health of their eyes.
- Preparation: The patient’s eye is numbed using local anesthetic drops so that they can remain
comfortable during the procedure. Sometimes, mild sedation may be given to help keep the patient calm.
- Small Incision:
At the edge of the cornea, usually about 2.8 mm – 3.0 mm wide, an incision will be made
by the surgeon. This incision allows for the insertion of an ICL or IPCL without the need for stitches.
- Lens Insertion:
A foldable ICL or IPCL is inserted through a small incision into the area behind the iris, which is the colored part of the eye. Once in place, it unfolds and gently sits on the natural space between the iris and natural lens.
- Positioning and
Verification: The lens is positioned accurately by the surgeon, and its stability is checked. In some cases, there may be a need to adjust the lens to enable it to get to its optimal position for clear eyesight.
- Recovery:
Incisions are self-sealing in such a way that stitches are not necessary. Following an uneventful operation, most patients can go home after a short period following surgery. Initially, there may be some discomfort or mild irritation, but this will soon pass.
- Follow-up:
Follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor the healing process and ensure the perfect functioning of these lenses after their implantation. Patients may also be required to take it easy for a few days so as to recover well from this kind of surgery.
Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) and Implantable Phakic Contact Lens (IPCL) procedures are
permanent vision correction options that often lead to immediate improvement in visual acuity for patients with keratoconus condition. Patients should therefore, consult their eye care professional before undergoing such treatment in order to ascertain whether they qualify as candidates and what risks and benefits they might face when having lenses implanted in their eyes.
